Detectives aided by a high-tech camera at a Honey Farms store last night tracked down a city man less than two hours after he allegedly robbed the convenience store, they said.
Dennis Catino, 26, of 53 Mendon St., Apartment 3, was arrested about 9:15 p.m. at a relative's apartment at 59 Dorchester St., according to Detective Sgt. Thomas R. Radula. He allegedly committed the robbery at 7:21 p.m. at the Honey Farm's store at 64 Vernon St., police said.
Sgt. Radula said Mr. Catino was charged with armed robbery. He was also wanted on a warrant charging assault and battery, assault and battery on a public employee and disorderly conduct.
The sergeant said Mr. Catino entered the store and approached the clerk. He asked her for street directions and then brandished a black handgun and demanded cash. After he got money, he fled and was last seen running across Vernon Street.
A description of the robber was broadcast over the police radio.
Sgt. Radula said "B" team detectives of the anti-crime unit headed by Detective Lt Thomas J. Gaffney and himself, along with officers Shane M. Marcotte and Scott Calhoun of the Operations Division, immediately went to work. At the store, they processed photos from what Sgt. Radula said is the best high-tech camera he's ever seen for surveillance at that type of store. Using the photos, an identification of the suspect was quickly made.
Police
then went to the second floor at 59 Dorchester St., where they confronted Mr.Catino. They recovered a black pellet handgun that is a replica of a .380 pistol and money taken in the robbery. Mr. Catino was placed under arrest. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Central District Court, police said.
